On April 30, 2019, California Assembly Labor and Employment Committee passed AB5 as amended on March 26, 2019. Votes were as follows:

Lorena Gonzalez (D) – 80th Assembly District

Reginald Jones-Sawyer (D) – 59th Assembly District

Ash Kalra (D) – 27th Assembly District

Luz Rivas (D) – 39th Assembly District

Tyler Diep (R) – 72nd Assembly District

Heath Flora (R) – 9th Assembly District

The bill will now move to the California Assembly Appropriations Committee.

Looking Forward

While it is somewhat surprising that the Labor and Employment Committee limited its industry carve outs as much as they did before passing the bill, it is not surprising that they passed the bill along party lines. This is likely to be a common theme throughout this process and given labor’s strong support of AB5.
