On September 10, 2019, the California Senate passed AB5 as amended on September 6, 2019. Votes for AB5 broke down along partisan lines with 29 ayes, 11 noes, and 0 no votes recorded.The bill will now move back to the California Assembly for concurrence in the amendments.

Looking Forward

Unless there is a significant surprise, the Assembly is likely to vote along party lines in concurrence adopting the Senate’s amendments of AB5 and send the bill to the Governor’s desk by the end of the week. As predicted in May of this year, it is likely AB5 will become law by the first of 2020.
